Porto Moniz is a municipality in the northwest corner of the island of Madeira. It is located west of Santana and Machico, and northwest of Funchal. The population in 2011 was 2,711, in an area of 82.93 km2.
The municipality features a natural lava pools complex that is popular with locals and tourists.

History
It is unclear when the area of Porto Moniz was first colonized, although it is likely that it occurred at the beginning of the last quarter of the 15th century. Francisco Moniz O Velho, is referred to as one of these first settlers, who had uncultivated lands in this area and was responsible for establishing a farm and chapel. Francisco Moniz was a nobleman from the Algarve, who married Filipa da Câmara (daughter of Garcia Rodrigues da Câmara). He was one of the sons of João Gonçalves Zarco, the discoverer of Porto Santo (1418) with Tristão Vaz Teixeira and later the island of Madeira with Bartolomeu Perestrelo (1419).

Geography
Administratively, the four parishes of Porto Moniz include:

Achadas da Cruz - the smallest parish in population and area, sharing the highest parish definition with Ribeira da Janela;
Porto Moniz - the largest parish by population (1668 inhabitants), it includes the settlement of Santa Maria Madalena and the main settlement of Porto Moniz, which is located southeast of Ponta do Tristão, which is the northernmost point on the island (at 332 m above sea level)
Ribeira da Janela - the smallest parish in density, but one of the two highest parishes in the municipality;
Seixal - the largest parish by area.

From the green mountains to the sea, passing by the natural pools, this municipality on the north coast is full of points of interest.

Volcanic pools, mystical forests and breathtaking landscapes

Located in the extreme north of the Island of Madeira, Porto Moniz is a municipality with some of the region's most beautiful images. Between the imposing mountains and the ocean's calm surface, Porto Moniz's municipality also dazzles with the charm of its picturesque parishes, which overflow with rich customs.

This whole region is deeply marked by the botanical diversity of the Laurissilva Forest, which from its height confronts the imposing northern sea, through its ridges, cliffs and coves. The sea, which has a strong presence all along the Madeiran coast, has a special influence on the municipality of Porto Moniz. Since the beginning of its construction, the inhabitants of Porto Moniz depended on fishing, which is still an important factor in the local economy. That relationship with the sea is also evident in the annual celebrations, such as the 'Porto Moniz Sea Week'. This, the biggest cultural, recreational and sporting event in the municipality, shows nautical activities such as canoe races, canoeing competitions, fishing contests and gastronomic exhibitions. You can't talk about Porto Moniz without mentioning the natural pools in its volcanic rocks where their clear waters are renewed cyclically. The eternal ex-libris of this municipality.

Details

Porto Moniz is a mandatory stopover either for its natural beauty, the trails that cross the Laurissilva or the emblematic natural pools, as well as its important historical and cultural heritage.
