São Vicente is a Portuguese municipality on the island of Madeira, with an area of ​​78.82 km² and 4865 inhabitants (2021 census).

The municipality of São Vicente is subdivided into three parishes, being limited to the east by the Santana Municipality, to the south by Câmara de Lobos, Ribeira Brava, Calheta, and Ponta do Sol, to the west by Porto Moniz and to the north has a coastline on the Atlantic Ocean.


Climate and relief

São Vicente has an oceanic climate, with an average temperature of around 24 °C in summer and 17 °C in winter.

As for the relief, it has a very rugged morphology, with some elevations exceeding 1,000 m, such as Bica da Cana (1,620 m), Paul da Serra (1,445 m), Pico do Cedro (1,026 m) , Rocha Negra (1,299 m), Estreitinho (1,094 m) and Casado (1,725 ​​m).

The water resources are the Ribeira de São Vicente and Ribeira Grande. 

Economy

In the tertiary sector, activities linked to small commerce and hotel services predominate.

The secondary sector includes the furniture, artefacts, cement, bakery and aggregate and sand extraction industries.

Finally, in the primary sector, the cultivation of legumes for grain, potatoes, family gardens, fresh fruits and vineyards stands out. It is also worth highlighting some importance to livestock farming, particularly in the raising of birds, pigs and goats.

Around 68% of its territory is covered by forest.

Parishes and population distribution

According to the 2021 census, the municipality's population totals 4865 residents, distributed across the three parishes as follows:

Boa Ventura: 1034 inhabitants.

Ponta Delgada: 1043 inhabitants.

São Vicente: 2788 inhabitants.

Land of valleys, vineyards, and Laurissilva

The municipality of São Vicente is home to a vast area of Laurissilva, the archipelago's most precious natural treasure.

The diversity of the flora and fauna of the Laurissilva forest, as well as its state of conservation, make the municipality of São Vicente one of the most privileged places to get in touch with Madeira's nature through its many hiking trails - often with the ocean as a backdrop.

The green sceneries of this region are also marked by the imprint of volcanic forces and the erosion of its slopes. Here, stands the famous volcanic caves, formed 890 thousand years ago. Therefore, there are plenty of reasons to come and discover the municipality of São Vicente.

Another of the most representative points of interest in the municipality of São Vicente is a small and peculiar chapel built inside a basalt rock, by the sea. The São Vicente or Calhau Chapel is a symbolic reflection of this region's deep connection to faith, and the constant presence of volcanic rock.

The municipality has around 6000 inhabitants, spread over three parishes: Boaventura, Ponta Delgada, and São Vicente. It extends over 78.70 km², where the abundant forest dominates the landscape.
