The Theme Park

The Madeira Theme Park (in Portuguese Madeira Theme Park) is located in Santana, in the north of the island, covering seven hectares of gardens, landscapes and pavilions where visitors can discover the history of Madeira and Porto Santo, as well as the culture location and traditions.

History

The settlement took place around the year 1550 with Minho people from Braga, from the north of mainland Portugal. That’s why the locals are nicknamed “Bragados”.

At the beginning of colonization, the lands were divided between nobles and some bourgeoisie, with the possession of sesmaria. There was an obligation to clear land and build housing for people and livestock.

Typical Houses in Santana

Santana, now a city and county seat, must be one of the most emblematic tourist areas on the island of Madeira. All because the houses where its people lived, in greater numbers, in other times, ended up resulting in a poster par excellence of the destination. They are triangle houses covered with straw.

Economy

In the field of economic activities, we have agriculture, which has been the basis of the population's subsistence, commerce, the provision of services and hotels and restaurants, with a diverse and quality offer.

The first hotel to be built there was the Hotel Acciaioli, in 1850. There was also the Hotel Figueira, with smaller dimensions. Among the pensions, we refer to the Pension of the widow of Paulino Pinto Correia, the hostel of Carlos Moniz Ferreira, the Pension of Joaquim de Freitas and that of João Marques de Freitas. This in 1938.

But those times are history. Today it has a high quality hotel offer.

Climate

The climate of Santana is very similar to the climate of the high areas of Funchal, respectively Monte, Santo António and São Gonçalo, although they have colder winters, hotter summers and a higher level of precipitation of around 2400 mm. and in Santana it is around 2000 mm. Summer in Santana is not very hot and rainy, which means Santana has an average summer temperature of 17 °C, the lowest on the entire island. Winter in Santana is cool, very rainy and foggy days can be very frequent, as in the high areas of Funchal, which have average winter temperatures of 8 °C, even lower than those in Santana, which are 10.5 °C.
